For R&D labs, the Initial Assessment consists of a review and top-level assessment of existing and emerging innovations, plus interviews with lab managers, scientists, and engineers. A report and presentation are produced outlining findings and options.

For commercial enterprises, the Initial Assessment involves a review of the applicable industries, the existing process for identifying and incorporating applicable innovations, and interviews with management and technical staff. A report and presentation are produced outlining findings and options.

The direction and scope of any additional work can be determined after this Initial Assessment.
